Colts Ladies stay in touch at the top

Cumbernauld Colts ladies entered the mid season break with a comfortable win against Cowdenbeath.

This win keeps them in third place in the division and close on the heels of Celtic 20s and Falkirk Ladies FC ahead of them.

A lightning start from the home side saw them open their account in the second minute, Keating making a near-post run to a cross and opening the home side’s account.

A second quickly followed from Keating’s partner up front Simpson in 17 minutes. Jackson bombed forward from her right-back position and placed a dangerous ball into the penalty box. Keating miscontrolled the ball and it fell kindly to Simpson who lashed it home.

The home side then dominated the proceedings but failed to add to their goal tally prior to the break.

At the restart Cumbernauld had to make one enforced change with Broadley replacing Keating who’d taken an ankle knock in the opening period.

Cumbernauld then proceeded to continued in the manner they finished the first half persistently attacking the Cowdenbeath back line looking to put the game to bed.

A third was to come just after the hour. Man of the match Hutchison’s strike being deflected and looping over MacKenzie in the visitors goal.

The only blot on Hutchison’s MoTM performance was when she attempted a clearance from defence that fell directly to Alix Moodie whose shot went over the head of McPhee in the Colts’ goal with 20 minutes remaining.

The three-goal cushion was again restored within a minute thanks to work from Fern and Wardlaw. Wardlaw broke forward and passed to Fern on the left. Fern then crossed enticingly for Wardlaw who met the cross first time finishing with aplomb. No mean feat having only landed back in the country eight hours prior to kick-off from her holiday in Mexico.

Wardlaw repaid Fern when she set her free through the middle having taken the ball from defence and broken forward. Fern went one on one with the keeper and converted with 15 minutes remaining.

There were two clearances off the visitors’ goal line before Wardlaw wrapped up the scoring with her second in the final minutes of the match as she dinked the ball over Mackenzie as she rushed out to narrow the attackers angle.
