Cumbernauld and Kilsyth face tough West tests

Junior sides Cumbernauld United and Kilsyth Rangers both face tough tests against Ayrshire sides in West of Scotland Cup third round ties on Saturday.

Cumbernauld have home advantage for the clash with a Kilwinning Rangers side who are unbeaten in 14 league and cup ties, a run which stretches back to September 19 when they were beaten at home by Kilsyth.

That run includes a 3-0 win over Cumbernauld in a Super League First Division clash at Kilwinning in December and, in their most recent match, a sensational 4-1 thumping of East Region giants Linlithgow Rose in the last 16 of the Scottish Junior Cup.

Kilsyth face, on paper, an even tougher task as they travel to take on Super League Premier Division outfit Beith, also still in the Scottish.

Both Cumbernauld and Kilsyth were left without a match once again last weekend when their league fixtures at Blantyre Victoria and Bellshill Athletic respectively were called off.

Cumbernauld did manage a friendly, losing 6-4 at Renfrew who scored two long range goals in the final 10 minutes. United’s scorers were Scott McHaffie (2), Steph McDonald and Davie Dickson while ex-United favourite Chris Zok scored two of Renfrew’s goals.

Both Saturday’s matches kick off at 2pm.
