Cumbernauld Colts looking to build on promising start to new season

Colts haven’t played since their win at Edusport with the past two weekends free due to scheduled opponents Selkirk withdrawing from the Lowland League and East Kilbride having a cup tie to play.

However co-manager Craig McKinlay admitted the break probably came at a good time for his players who have made an encouraging start to the campaign.

He said: “We’ve had a few wee niggles and knocks so it’s probably been decent timing for us.

“It’s still early days, but six games in we’ve got to be satisfied with the start we’ve made. We’ve had some tough fixtures playing a lot of good sides so to get four wins from that we’ve got to be satisfied.

“Even still there’s a couple of results in there that we were disappointed with. But overall, considering the number of new lads we’ve managed to bed in it’s been an encouraging start.

“In each of the games we’ve probably had on average five starters who have been new players. Considering that’s virtually half your starting line-up, I’ve got to say that all the lads have been great since they’ve come in. They’ve fitted into the dressing room really well.

“We’ve got a good group which makes it easier for players to come in and the boys we’ve brought in we know will do a good job for us.”

Striker Fraser Team in particular has got off to a good scoring start and is developing a blossoming partnership with, and helping to ease reliance on, last season’s top scorer Sean Brown.

McKinlay said: “Fraser has started five and he’s scored five goals. That for any striker at any level is a good ratio.

“He and Sean are starting to look like they could be a strong partnership. Sean will still get his fair share but you want goals from other players and thus far they have linked up well and have had assists for each other.

“It’s a work in progress but I think they’ll get stronger and more of an understanding.”
