Cumbernauld stun Kilsyth with second half fightback

After an evenly fought first half in which play, although never really exciting, was end to end, Kilsyth were a goal ahead at the interval.

But after break United were transformed and once they equalised there was only one winner.

United, unchanged for the third successive game, started strongly and a Martin Shiels shot was saved by David Kane.

The pace was fast and furious and a great Darren Bowie effort from 30 yards just cleared the Kilsyth bar.

At the other end ex-United striker Jamie Watson was right through on goal but home goalkeeper David Buchanan managed to get a foot to the ball and clear.

Kilsyth forward Danny Smith was prominent for the visitors and his excellent drive from 30 yards was just wide of the goal.

Smith, however, was instrumental in Rangers’ opening score on 42 minutes. Another shot from the dangerous front man was spilled by Buchanan and Watson followed up to net.

Unioted brought on Robbie Winters and Jamie Kennedy for John Higgins and Bowie at the break, but for the opening 15 minutes of the half Kilsyth looked the more likely.

But the match changed on the hour. Winters fed Chris Lennon whose ferocious shot was parried by Kane and Shiels headed home.

United tails were up and a few minutes later Lennon cut inside a defender and rifled a shot past Kane.

A third followed when Shiels’ ball across goal was coolly converted by Lennon.

Lennon was unstoppable and a run up the left wing and cross saw Winters score United’s fourth.

That ended the scoring as United ran out worthy winners with the Kilsyth faithful wondering what had happened in the second 45 minutes.
