Derby joy for Bellshill while Rob Roy overcome holders Cumbernauld

Bellshill Athletic took the honours in their Lanarkshire derby with Thorniewood United as the Euroscot Engineering Sectional League Cup action continued for junior sides on Wednesday night.

David Lilley’s side were 4-1 winners over their rivals on their own Robertson Park pitch, leaving the Viewpark side bottom of the table after two 4-1 defeats and with little chance of repeating last season’s group win and progress to the knockout stages.

Darren Ferguson, Scott Morton with two and ex-Thorniewood man Mark Daly got the Bellshill goals which gave Athletic hope of qualification after their opening defeat at St Roch’s but they still face two tough matches against Premier Division outifts Shettleston and Petershill.

Bellshill face Shettleston on Saturday while Thorniewood travel to Petershill.

Holders Cumbernauld United were beaten 2-0 at Guy’s Meadow by a Kirkintilloch Rob Roy side who now top Group 7 with two wins out of two and no goals conceded.

Kevin Watt and Danny McKenzie got the goals.

In the other group match Kilsyth Rangers entered the fray but lost their first match 2-1 to a Rossvale side who bounced back from their 5-0 thumping by Rob Roy in their opening fixture.

McBride put Kilsyth ahead but goals by Team and Gordon gave Rossvale the points.

Cumbernauld and Kilsyth now face each other at Cumbernauld on Saturday with both needing a win to maintain any chance of progress.

Rob Roy will hope to make it three wins in a row when they face Dunipace at Guy’s Meadow on Friday night.

Lesmahagow share top spot in Section 1 after following up their opening day win over Lanark United with a 4-2 victory away to Royal Albert.

Forth Wanderers played their first game but were thrashed 7-2 at Larkhall who share top spot with ‘Gow.

Alan Christie gave Forth a 1-0 half-time lead from the penalty spot but Larkhall hit the goal trail with seven after the break, Willie McClaren netting Forth’s ‘consolation’.

Forth will look to bounce back at home to Royal Albert on Saturday while Lanark entertain Larkhall

Lesmahagow have no game this Saturday but face a potential group decider at home to Larkhall next Wednesday.

Carluke Rovers bounced back from their opening defeat at Gartcairn to secure a 3-3 draw away to Shotts Bon Accord.

Watt, Murphy and Smillie were the scorers for Rovers. Next up for them is a home tie with Wishaw Juniors on Saturday.
