Edinburgh City 0 Clyde 1: Higgins goal closes gap on leaders

Coming into the game on the back of a week’s long rest, it perhaps came as no surprise that Barry Ferguson’s men looked a little off the pace in the opening moments of the match.

It was their opponents who created the first clear cut opportunity on 12 minutes- when Jordan Caddow’s flicked on header found striker Ousman See in a good position. His right footed effort went well wide though and he really should have done better.

Eventually, the Bully Wee began to show some positive signs and in the 21st minute the ball fell to an isolated Scott McLaughlin at the edge of the area. The Clyde captain hit a sweet volley that couldn’t beat the keeper, but forced a great save nonetheless.

Edinburgh’s Ryan Porteous was shown a yellow card in the 41st minute after he brought down Peter McDonald who had made a decent looking run towards goal. McDonald took the shot from the free kick but it was skewed high over the bar the opportunity coming to nothing.

Both teams were pushing hard for the first goal and Clyde nearly gifted it to Edinburgh when a clearance from Martin McNiff went horribly wrong on 61 minutes.

The defender attempted to back header the ball delivered from Christopher McKee’s long throw, however it went agonisingly close to beating John Gibson who needed a strong hand to palm it away.

Barry Ferguson’s side recovered from this though to grab the all important goal with 20 minutes to spare. The ball was headed across goal, coming to Sean Higgins who hit an improvised overhead kick that nestled into the right hand side of the goal.

With a last throw of the dice, Edinburgh threw on Craig Beattie and he made an almost immediate impression on the game.

In the 84th minute, Gordon Donaldson’s excellent delivery was headed into the back of the net from said mentioned Beattie- however referee Graham Beaton disallowed the effort due to an apparent push in the build up.
