Football: Kilsyth lose out despite good game

Another day of disappointment for Rangers, a narrow defeat at Yoker, coupled with a first win for Renfrew leaves them bottom of the first division with only two points after six league matches.

A continuation of this form can have only one conclusion, relegation to the district league.

It was not that they were particularly poor, or that Yoker were greatly superior, but quite clearly at this point they are not good enough to stay in this division.

Rangers did start well, they attacked Yoker from the kick- off and after only ten minutes they were ahead, Kelly had a good headed attempt which was only partially cleared and McPeake got onto the ball to hit it home.

It was a shortlived lead though; four minutes later Harvey ran through unchallanged to fire in a shot which came off the inside of the post and ended up behind Duke. Another five minutes and they are behind, from a corner kick Collins rose above the defence to head in a second Yoker goal.

Another example of the very poor defending that has cost Rangers dear. They did strike back very soon after though; Kelly fired in a good low shot from an acute angle and it went between the posts and re-emerged through the side netting, there was a little confusion for a few seconds but the goal was quite rightly awarded and Rangers were back in the hunt.

That was the end of the goal spate for the first half and the remainder was pretty even with a few chances for both sides but level at the interval was a fair reflection of the play so far.

Play resumed with the Yoker striker, D Crerand, sporting a head bandage, he had taken a knock in a clash with Doyle near the end of the first half. It had become quite an intense struggle between two evenly matched sides but if anything Rangers were looking the more likely to gain superiority with Eeles showing up well, he made a few good runs and put over some good cross balls but no-one was taking advantage.

The referee was now making a few bookings on both sides but it was in reality a measure of his own poor control. Yoker had a good spell midway through the half with first Duke making a good save from Maitland and then Hogg clearing a ball off the line.

Rangers had a few attempts on goal as well, the best being a shot by Waters which Wilmslow did well to hold.

It was looking like the game was heading for a draw until with about nine minutes left another corner for Yoker saw Frew get above the Rangers defence yet again to head in the winner. In a last minute attempt to salvage a point McLaren came on for McKenzie but it was too late, another defeat and with games against the two league leaders,

With games against Beith and Shotts coming up after the September holiday break even this early the situation appears desperate.

No game this week, September holiday, following Saturday, home to Beith.

The evening will consist of dinner and will be compered by well known local personality Philip Differ followed by comedian John Gillick and main speaker Jimmy Nichol ex Rangers and Kilmarnock and currently with Hibernaian FC.
