Irvine Meadow 4 Kilsyth Rangers 1: End of Rangers' unbeaten league run

The reverse at Meadow Park was their first Super League First Division defeat of the season and only their second in 15 matches in all competitions.

Both teams had early chances. Meadow came close from a corner before Paul McBride sent Nicky Prentice clear of the home defence only for a late flag to halt the move.

Prentice had another chance for Kilsyth but his header was cleared by the defence.

The home team took the lead on 15 minutes when Graham Boyd flicked a long ball on and Graham Muir latched on to it to shoot past the outstretched Andy Carlin in the Kilsyth goal.

Meadow doubled their advantage less than two minutes later, Jared Willet picking up a loose ball on the edge of the area and managing to get a shot away on the turn which found the top corner.

Kilsyth hauled themselves back into the game almost straight away. Meadow full-back Mark Murray tried to shepherd the ball out for a goal kick but good pressure from Frannie Kelly forced him in to a mistake and the ball fell to Paul McBride who crossed for Scott Davidson to volley firmly past Shaun Newman.

Boyd was winning most of the aerial tussles with the Kilsyth defence and Meadow extended their lead to 3-1 when Ryan Begley rose to head home a Ben Carson corner.

Kilsyth had a few chances with Kelly and Prentice coming closest.

Paul McBride up front was doing his best to get them back in the game, winning flick-ons and also holding the ball up well, but Kilsyth were unable to profit from his good forward play.

Just before half-time it looked like Kilsyth had a penalty when Prentice was brought tumbling to the ground but referee decided it was right on the edge of the box. Kevin McBride took the resulting free-kick but his shot went past the far post.

Early in the second half Meadow were out of sight.

A long clearance from their defence caught out the Kilsyth defence and Boyd managed to gather the ball and shoot low across goal into the bottom corner.

The second half was a bit of a damp squib after this as Meadow knew the game was won.

Again Paul McBride tried his best for Kilsyth but the ball just wouldn’t break for him or his team mates in front of goal.

Meadow could and should have added to their lead but somehow Graeme Barbour managed to miss the target with the goal gaping.
