Kilsyth 8 Cumbernauld 0: Rangers rampant in derby demolition

Kilsyth Rangers enjoyed a demolition derby as they recorded their biggest win for almost a quarter of a century.

It was made all the sweeter as it came against a Cumbernauld United side they have struggled against in recent seasons.

But although the match ended in humiliation for United, it did not look that way in the early stages; it was a pretty even match for the first half hour but once Rangers got in front it was really no contest.

United had the best chances early on and Simon Eeles made a good run but his finish was well off target.

Rangers first chance came when Franny Kelly got his head to a good cross over from Nicky Prentice but the ball went just wide.

Rangers were coming much more into the game and Paul McBride won the ball in midfield and put in a low shot which was helped on its way into the net by Scott Davidson to put Rangers ahead just on the half hour mark.

Three minutes later they doubled their advantage. Prentice struck the post but picked up the rebound and sent it across goal for Davidson to knock in his second of the day.

Two up at half-time hardly flattered Rangers who had produced some great football in the latter stages of the first half.

The second half was hardly restarted when Davidson fired in a shot which took a slight deflection to deceive O’Boyle on its way to the net to complete his hat-trick.

Rangers were rampant and it was not long before Paul McBride added another with a fine solo effort.

The United resistance was crumbling and following a corner kick Chris Reid headed in the fifth goal.

A substitution was made with Rangers new signing Iain Diack coming on for Davidson who went off to great applause.

It was only a question now of how many goals Rangers might score but there was something of a lull in their efforts for a little while and they made another couple of changes bringing on Corey Pearson and Danny O’Neill for Paul McBride and Gary Kelly.

It was only a few minutes before O’Neill got his name on the scoresheet with a cracking shot to the top corner of the net and a few minutes later he made it a double to put Rangers seven up.

Almost on the final whistle Diack, who had shown plenty of fine touches, completed the day’s scoring with a header from a cross in by Prentice.
