A good win for Rangers, which takes them through to the next round of the Scottish, and perhaps more importantly, restores some confidence in the team after the recent run of poor results.

It was not quite as easy as the final score might suggest though. It was only in the final stages that Rangers’ strength prevailed and the result was put beyond dispute.

Rangers won the toss and had the advantage of the gusty breeze for the first period and it only took one minute before they made use of it. In their very first foray upfield a Duffy shot was cleared off the line and in the resulting scramble Craig Hughes headed the ball past O’Brien to provide the best possible start.

It was all Rangers for the next 20 minutes and they could have had another couple of goals with a little luck. Prentice had a couple of good efforts and O’Brien made several good saves.

Then in the 27th minute Maloney broke down the right, the linesman had raised his flag to signal offside but the referee waved play on, the home defence hesitated waiting for the whistle and meantime the ball was crossed to Neave waiting at the far post to knock the ball in and Blairgowrie were back on level terms.

It only took a couple of minutes more though before Rangers had gone ahead once more. O’Brien turned a fine 30-yard free-kick by Prentice round the post. From the resulting corner kick P. McBride bundled the ball into the net.

Rangers had quite a few more chances before the interval but there was no further score.
