Cumbernauld go through to the knockout stage of the league cup with a well deserved win at Duncansfield last Wednesday evening.

Over the piece they were the smarter team, taking their chances when they arose. Although Rangers also had plenty of chances they failed to take advantage and paid the price.

This match again highlighted their deficencies in attack and defensive slackness which must be addressed if they are to have a more successful season than the last one.

United had a good opening to the match. In only the fourth minute they were ahead, a shot in hit a defender and broke to Scott who shot past Duke.

It was all Cumbernauld in the opening stages. A few minutes later Eeles tried a long shot which sailed over the bar.

After the opening quarter of an hour Rangers began to come into the game and were getting a good few shots in, mostly from long range, although Duffy made a good opening and put in a good effort from an acute angle, but Fraser dealt well with it.

Then a spell of concerted Rangers attacking had at least three attempts blocked within a few seconds before the ball was cleared.

United were far from out of it though and Duke could only parry a good shot in. It was picked up by Dickson who knocked in a second goal. They went in at half-time well pleased with their two goal lead.

It was all action again in the opening spell of the second half, chances coming at both ends as Rangers fought to get back into the game.
