Pain no barrier as Clyde star Marsh lands vital blow

The Broadwood side began the season as the bookies’ favourites to lift the League 2 title but have far from fired on all cylinders so far.

However 25-year-old Marsh is hoping that Saturday’s win, their first since mid-September, could prove a turning point.

The former Cumbernauld United player set the Bully Wee on their way by grabbing the opening goal, bravely taking an accidental punch in the head from Montrose ’keeper Ross Salmon land the crucial blow.

He said: “It came from along throw in, Mark [McLaughlin] flicked it on, and I just threw myself at it.

“I wasn’t sure what I was getting from it. A yellow card normally, it was quite brave. He [Salmon] cleaned me out, a punch and a kick at the same time. But I’d take a kick for the team if it results in a goal.”

The goal sent Clyde on their way as they tried to put a poor league run and a shock Scottish Cup exit behind them.

Marsh said: “It’s good to get back to winning ways, especially back at home. The fans were loud today, you heard them singing again.”

It wasn’t all plain sailing though. After going 2-0 up they conceded and for a spell it looked as if they might struggle to hold on until Scott Ferguson restored their two-goal advantage.

Marsh admitted: “We had lost a goal, and there was a wee five minute spell where I was just scared of losing another goal I think. We had done so well to work it up, and I was just trying to work it up.

“He warned me, you’ve got 10 minutes to calm down, or you’ll be sent off or coming off. I think it was the right decision there.”

Next up for Clyde is a home clash with an Elgin City side who replaced Montrose in second place following their defeat at Broadwood.

“The aim’ss just to get back in the top four now,” said Marsh. “There;s been a lot of expectation on us this year and we’ve not been able to meet that yet. Its frustrating, there’s pressure on us but we should deliver.”
