Rangers run the show with five-goal display at Maryhill

Rangers won fairly easily with a fine display of attacking football against the newly promoted Glasgow side.

The visitors opened well and after only five minutes a corner went to Gary Kelly who set up Nicky Prentice to open the scoring with a fine header.

Rangers were running the show and Paul McBride was close with a shot which went just wide.

It was Prentice again though who added the second goal after 22 minutes as he chased a long ball into the penalty box, was downed by Walton and converted the resulting spot-kick himself.

Maryhill finally began to get into the game and Monaghan reduced the deficit with a long shot which came off the inside of the post on its way to the net.

It was a more even game from here on but an indirect free-kick awarded well inside the box gave Rangers a chance just before the interval. It hit the wall though and was scrambled clear.

Rangers resumed where they had left off before half-time and dominated the early play once again.

It was just on the hour mark though before they got a third goal, Prentice broke away and put a good cross over to Paul McBride who shot in eight yards.

It was a good open game with both sides playing some attractive attacking football and in the 70th minute Maryhill got themselves back into the game when McLelland scored with a diving header following a free-kick.

It was a very shortlived comeback though; within a minute Corey Pearson had restored Rangers’ two-goal lead and less than one minute later it was

Paul McBride who got his own second goal and made it five for Rangers.

Three goals in less than three minutes but the goalfest was over, the remainder of the game was over although a penalty award for Maryhill gave them a chance to get back but the ball hit the post and was cleared.
