Football supporters and players were stunned to hear of the death of former player Chris Mitchell at the age of 27.

Chris signed for Falkirk from Livingston in July 2006 and was one of several promising youngsters at the club. He was on the bench for the game against Inverness on Boxing Day, but had to wait until April 26, 2007 to make his debut against St Mirren at Love Street, as a sub for Gerald Aafjes. He started his first game against Hearts on May 5 and gave a good account of himself at right wing back. There were four Academy graduates in the starting line up, but manager John Hughes was full of praise for Chris. He held his place for the remaining games.

One memorable moment came in a pre-season friendly at The Falkirk Stadium where he scored the winning goal against Ajax. He also played in both Europa League games against Vaduz. His outstanding form attracted the attention of Scotland and he won seven under-21 caps. He was a big favourite of then manager Billy Stark, who selected him ahead of more prominent contenders for wing back.

His loan spells at Montrose and Ayr had gained him valuable experience before a transfer to Bradford City in July 2011 took him south with friend and Falkirk team-mate Mark Stewart.

A change of manager at Valley parade saw his chances reduced and he returned to Scotland to join Queen of the South. This season Mitchell played for Clyde.
