Fun day could make a difference

Children across North Lanarkshire are being encouraged to have fun, get fit and raise money for charity – all in one day!

This year’s Cumbernauld 10k event on Sunday, September 22 includes 1k runs for P5 to P7 kids and a 3k event for S1 to S4 pupils – and there are lots of prizes up for grabs.

The top three runners in each race will receive a medal and trophy from organisers North Lanarkshire Council.

And the schools with the highest number of entrants for both the 1k and 3k runs will receive a trophy, donated by the event’s charity partners the Scottish Centre for Children with Motor Impairments and the Scottish Spina Bifida Association (SSBA), and a day out at Broadwood Stadium for the P5 to 7 classes.

Also, for the first time, the SSBA are offering three special prizes, including an iPod Touch, to the top three fundraisers for the charity, from the 1k and 3k races.

Clare Cogan Turner, assistant director of fundraising for the SSBA says: “As one of the highest incidences of spina bifida is right here across Lanarkshire, we wanted to get children involved in fundraising which will directly impact the lives of those living in their own community. We hope this competition will be a great incentive for the 1k and 3k runners to get involved with our vital work.”

Children wanting to raise funds for the Association should visit www.ssba.org.uk/cumbernauld_10k or call their fundraising team on 01236 794508 for information and official sponsor forms.

“Our 1k runs are always great fun, with 250 children taking part last year,” said Councillor Jim Logue, chairman of North Lanarkshire Leisure Ltd, “and for secondary pupils, the 3k is an opportunity to experience a real race and record an official time.
