GREAT BRITAIN women’s Olympic handball captain Lynn McCafferty is fearful that funding for the sport will be significantly cut in the wake of London 2012 but insists that a lack of money won’t stop it from flourishing.

McCafferty, who has returned to Cumbernauld after several years playing in Denmark, retired after Great Britain lost all four of their group games in the Olympics but saw firsthand how the sport captured the public’s imagination.

With her serious playing days now at an end, the 33-year-old – who carried the Olympic flame through Selkirk – has been reunited with husband Gary after years of living apart due to her playing commitments.

But the seven-a-side game still dominates McCafferty’s thinking and with sports that are unlikely to win a medal at Rio 2016 at risk of funding cuts, she believes the elite future of the women’s game relies heavily on handball’s administrators being resourceful.
