Last year over 500 runners took part, with a resounding 83 per cent reporting they were pleased with the event.

Among those were James Gibb from Motherwell and Elizabeth Newton from Cumbernauld, who completed a survey after the race to help identify how the event could be improved further. Paul Gunn from Pollock won a £70 voucher from Run For It, and all three received free entry to this year’s race as a thank you for their feedback.

As well as the main 10k race, there will be 1k runs for P5, 6 and 7 pupils and a 3k run for S1 to S4s. A Victory Mile event, organised by the Scottish Spina Bifida Association, will also take place for wheelchair users or anyone who would like to join in.

“The focus is on sport this year, with North Lanarkshire being a proud host venue for the Commonwealth Games, and part of the legacy is to encourage more people to be more active,” said Councillor Jim Logue, convener of the council’s learning and leisure services committee and chairman of North Lanarkshire Leisure Ltd.

“At the Cumbernauld 10k event, there’s something for everyone: races for children, the Victory Mile and the 10k race itself which is an ideal distance for people who have just taken up running as well as club athletes.”

This the eighth annual Cumbernauld 10k, which is organised by North Lanarkshire Council and North Lanarkshire Leisure Ltd in partnership with NHS Lanarkshire and Campsies Centre Cumbernauld Ltd and supported by Strathmore Spring Water and the Cumbernauld News and Chronicle.
