Cumbernauld hosts world disability golf championship

The competition, organised by Scottish Disability Golf, will be held at the Westerwood Resort from Thursday to Sunday.

Scratch and handicap golfers, from countries including Spain, Belgium, Germany and South Africa, will play over 72-holes for the coveted title.

Over 24 champions will attend, and include the current Czech, Dutch, German and British Open winners, as well as many previous World, Asian and North American title holders.

Among the Scots taking part are Bob Drysdale (Tayport), Alan Robertson (Stirling), Scott Anderson (Aberdeen), Kris Adams (Glasgow), Ryan McDonald (Newton Mearns), Jim Gales (North East Fife), Steven Cunningham (Alloa), James Thomson (Millport), Derek Milne (East Fife), Steve Haxton (Perth), Trevor Crombie (Kirkcaldy), Peter Moore (Paisley) and Paul McGinley (Edinburgh).

Jim Gales, the SDGP Secretary said: “We have received some fantastic support from Trusts and Foundations from across the UK and the assistance from Scottish businesses which, in these difficult times, is very welcome. “The Royal & Ancient have once again, provided some fantastic support and continue to give generously to disabled golf.

The event will tee-off on Thursday at 1pm.

Fiona White, the event manager at the Westerwood Hotel in Cumbernauld, who has kindly agreed to represent the SDGP as Honorary Captain for 2015, said: “It’s always good to meet up with the guys from the SDGP again and we hope that we can assist in promoting disabled golf more in the future.”

In recent years, the SDGP organised more golf and golf training than any other disabled group, which included a brand new four-day World Team Ryder Cup, a three-day Scottish Championship and the inaugural Scotland v England Auld Enemies Cup match against England.
