Frank up for prestigious award

LOCAL golfer Frank Anderson from Palacerigg GC has beaten off competition from across the country to be one of five people short-listed for the inaugural XOS Volunteer of the Year Award at this month’s XOS Scottish Golf Awards.

Frank (pictured right), along with the four other successful nominees, will attend the prestigious event on Friday, February 18, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Glasgow, with the winner being presented with the award on the night.

The new award has been introduced to recognise the contribution of golf’s unsung heroes, from volunteer coaches to devoted committee members who have made a significant difference to the game at their local club or within their local community.

Anderson has led a revolution in the junior section at Palacerigg Golf Club in Cumbernauld in recent years. As well as raising £2000 in funds for the club last year, Frank spends around 20 hours a week at the club and the club’s 900 per cent increase in junior membership over the past two years through national junior programme clubgolf is a clear outcome of Frank’s outstanding contribution.

Frank spoke of his delight at being nominated for the prestigious award, saying: “I am surprised and thrilled to be nominated for this award, never mind being short-listed for the final five. It should be a fantastic night and one which I’m looking forward to whether I win or not.”

The Scottish Golf Union received a large number of entries for the award, highlighting some exceptional stories of volunteering at club level and the amount of hours being put in behind the scenes at golf clubs up and down the country.

The four other finalists are: Gael Carlier (Kintore GC), George Alexander (Carrickvale GC), David Nathan (Isle of Seil GC) and Evan Sutherland (Reay GC).

“We estimate there are around 15,000 volunteers involved in Scottish Golf and this new award celebrates the fantastic work being done. Each volunteer makes a significant contribution in their own way and our judging panel faced a very difficult decision in selecting the final five,” said Hamish Grey, chief executive of the Scottish Golf Union.

A limited number of tickets are still available for the XOS Scottish Golf Awards 2011, which will be hosted by BBC golf commentator Andrew Cotter with the Ryder Cup trophy also on show.
