Holly sets new bests on day one of Commonwealth heptathlon.

The 18-year-old former Kilsyth Academy pupil amassed a total of 3,270 points from her four opening day events which included two new personal bests.

Holly, the first Scottish Games competitor at the event in 20 years, opened with a solid 100 metres hurdles run of 14.17 seconds.

She then launched the shot 11.58 metres with her second thrown to set the first of her two nes bests.

A brilliant high jump clearance of 1.69 metres followed - five centimetres higher than her previous best - before the Strathclyde University student closed her first day with a 200 metres run of 25.50 seconds.

She said: "I have had a good day and I have loved it.

"The high jump was great and I’m delighted to get up to 1.69. I had been in low 1.60s for a while and felt it was an event I could push on a bit with – and that’s happened here. I also managed a PB in the shot.

"The 200 metres, the last event, wasn’t my best and I just tightened up on the home straight – maybe over the last 50 metres or so.

"But I won’t beat myself up too much about it because I see the whole Gold Coast experience as about learning for me and seeing what I can take from it into future events."

Tomorrow Holly will tackle the long jump and javelin before closing with the gruelling 800 metres.
