Hopes were high in Scottish

It was the first time in several years that the club had progressed to the final. On the way they had played exceptionally well beating several more fancied teams.

Hopes were high, although everyone knew that they would have to produce another superb performance as their opponents were Arbroath, one of the best teams in the country.

The team played very well and at times were more than a match for the opposition, winning two of the four matches. It was not to be, however, as the result depended on the overall points score which ended up in favour of Arbroath. Cumbernauld had nothing to be ashamed of as throughout the competition they had equipped themselves extremely well and given the club and the players a welcome boost.

The day before several of the same gents were playing at Arbroath Stadium against Turriff in the semi-final of the Scottish National Cup.

This time the news was better as they produced a great performance to beat their opponents and progress to the final which will be played over the Easter week-end at Stirling. At this time we do not know who they will play against, but after their previous victories confidence is high of a victory.

A level down the ladies team were involved in a play-off in the final of the Glasgow and District Triples League against the Allander Club.

This involved two teams playing away and two teams playing at home. It was always going to be a tight contest and so it turned out. Teamwork was vital as the players knew they had to keep the score close if losing, to give the others a chance. This they did with the two teams away losing, but the two home teams winning and accumulating enough points to win the title by a single shot.

On Friday at the stadium the last of the ladies’ internal competitions were concluded with the final of the Ladies’ Triples. It ended in a very close match with the team of R. McIntyre, M. Hume and E. Rodgers fighting back to within a point of the eventual winners L. Fleming, P. Casey and S. Ross.

Last week also saw the final of the Gent’s Singles with the champion of the last few years J. Byron up against A. Barrie. It was a very enthralling match for the spectators, but again the title went to the defending champion, although his younger opponent also played very well and gave him a close game.

Well done to all the local players and good luck to the gent’s team in the final and to all the players who are involved in the Glasgow and District Finals which will be played at the Stadium next Sunday, April 13.
