Kilsyth pick up a win in Central League Cup

Carluke Rovers 3Kilsyth Rangers 3(Kilsyth won 4-2 on penalties)

AT last the long suffering Rangers' fans have something to celebrate, a win over lowly Carluke in the Central League Cup although it came courtesy of a penalty shoot-out after Carluke dramatically equalised in the last few seconds of the ninety minutes.

At least a few goals are starting to come although the defence is still leaking soft goals. Still, with the squad right down to the bare bones, any win is more than welcome.

Not much in it in the early part of the game but as it progressed Rangers gradually began to exert some pressure on the home defence and in eighteen minutes DALRYMPLE picked up a ball knocked out by the home keeper and fired in a good shot from about ten yards. The lead did not last long though, McAULEY equalised with a good fifteen yard effort which was really Carluke's first chance of the game. Rangers restored their lead through Tony MARTIN just after the half hour, he ran in and scored from just insude the box. Nearing halftime and a handball offence saw Rangers awarded a penalty, DOYLE put it away to put Rangers two up going in at halftime.

Rangers took up from where they had left off wit a few good chances which they could not capitalise on but then gradually dropped out of the match and it was no surprise when Carluke pulled another goal back.

Sensing that they could still save the game Carluke piled on the pressure and Rangers defending was quite shambolic at times but somehow they pulled through and in the last ten minutes it was Rangers who were again in the ascendancy, making four or five good chances to put the game out of reach. Yet it was Carluke who came back in almost the last minute and in a scramble in the Rangers goalmouth they had two or three chances before the ball finally found the back of the net. It was now down to a penalty shootout to determine who would go through; Rangers put their first four penalties away courtesy of Doyle, Dalrymple, Murray and McJimpsey. Carluke had two scores, one shot wide and one hit the post, it is Rangers who wait to find out who they will meet in the next round of the competition in which thay reached the final last season.
