Lady Rocks make cup history

In a first for St. Maurice’s Basketball Club, all three Lady Rocks National League teams have now qualified for the Scottish Cup Finals to be held next month.

Lady Rocks Cadettes (head coach Tony McDaid, assistant coaches Amanda McQueen and Nadelle Strain) were the first team to qualify, with a hard fought game against Tayside Musketeers at St. Maurice’s High School in Cumbernauld.

Lady Rocks held the lead for much of the game, but Tayside took over in the fourth quarter. With seconds left in the game, Lady Rocks managed to steal the ball and score two points on the final buzzer to win the game by one point, with the final score 56–55. The Cadettes will now face St. Mirren West College Scotland in the Scottish Cup Finals.

Next up were Lady Rocks Juniors (head coach Mairi MacNeill, assistant coaches Toni Carvill and Erin Gilbride), who played Polonia Phoenix, again at the club’s home court in Cumbernauld.

This was not such a close game, and the Juniors comfortably won with the final score 58–33. Like the Cadettes, the Junior squad will play St. Mirren West College Scotland in the Scottish Cup Finals.

Finally Lady Rocks Seniors (head coach Colin Haldane) played Clark Eriksson Falkirk Fury at the Mariner Centre in Camelon. Lady Rocks got off to a slow start, but took control of the game in the second half to win comfortably with the final score 48-65. The Senior squad will play City of Edinburgh Kool Kats in the Scottish Cup Finals.

The Scottish Cup Finals will be held at the Lagoon Leisure Centre Arena in Paisley over the weekend of February 1-2.

The schedule for the weekend is as follows: Saturday, February 1 – Under 16 Men, St. Mirren West College Scotland v City of Edinburgh Kings, 11 a.m.; Under 18 Women, Lady Rocks v St. Mirren West College Scotland, 1.15 p.m.; Senior Men, Clark Eriksson Falkirk Fury vs St. Mirren West College Scotland, 3.30 p.m.

Sunday, February 2 – Under 16 Women, Lady Rocks v St. Mirren West College Scotland, 11 a.m.; Under 18 Men, Perth Phoenix v Boroughmuir Blaze, 1.15 p.m.; Senior Women, City of Edinburgh Kool Kats v Lady Rocks, 3.30 p.m..

This has been a successful season so far for the club. As well as qualifying for the Scottish Cup finals, the senior team are so far undefeated.

The club are also seeing success at young age groups with the Young Leaders still going strong and the teams in the Regional Development Legue still progressing.
