Local kids score at Hampden

TEN lucky children from Woodlands Primary School in Cumbernauld recently had the chance to play on the famous Hampden pitch and meet Scotland and Wigan Athletic star James McArthur at the Tesco Bank Football Challenge National Festival.

The Festival, which saw 300 children from schools across Scotland descend on the National Stadium for a day of football and fun, was the culmination of the first year of the Tesco Bank Football Challenge.

James was joined by Rangers player, Gregg Wylde and Celtic and Scotland women’s international Suzanne Grant to support the event.

James said: “It can only be a good thing that football is getting back into primary schools. I’ve got so many great memories of playing with my friends at school, which lead to me falling in love with the game. You could see the kids loved it – most importantly they had fun which is the most important thing at their age.”

The Tesco Bank Football Challenge is a four year community programme run in partnership with the Scottish FA. The programme introduces football to Primary 2 and 3 children (six to eight years old) across Scotland and gets them engaged in a healthy and active lifestyle. Scottish FA coaches have delivered the programme to 300 local boys and girls throughout North Lanarkshire with over 18,000 children across the country having been involved since the programme started last September.
