Lanarkshire Longhorns Junior American football team got the defence of their divisional title off to a flying start with a resounding win against the new junior squad from East Kilbride Pirates at the weekend.

With a squad full of new players the Longhorns anticipated this year would perhaps present more of a challenge, but both established and rookie players stepped up to deliver a clear indication that they intend to compete this season.

Veteran running back Grant Winter combined with rookies Jamie Blades (RB), Craig Muir (RB) and Stephen Cranston (QB) for over 500 yards rushing and eight touchdowns.

On defence, Dylan Yardley completed his first game for the team with a touchdown, seven tackles, two sacks, an interception and a fumble recovery! The rest of the team all made a significant contribution to the outcome of this match up and earned the rewards of a long winter practice period.

East Kilbride have been developing their youth programme in recent seasons and with this being their first game at junior level the young squad will take a good deal of experience from this game.

The closing game of the season at East Kilbride will give a measure of how both squads have developed over the course of the season.

Lanarkshire Longhorns will now look to keep the momentum going in their next two games against Clackmannanshire Ravens (away, May 25) and last year’s divisional rivals, Highland Wildcats (Beltane Park, Sunday, June 1).
