COMPANY BUYOUT: A businessman from Cumbernauld led a successful multi-million pound management buyout of a London company. Tony Sweeney said he planned to help reverse the brain drain from Scotland by moving many jobs at audit recovery and property management firm Consultiam to their new headquarters in Lennox Road, Seafar. Mr Sweeney led the team which paid £2.75m for the firm, which employed 62 people and boasted such clients as Vodafone, the Post Office, several banks, Carphone Warehouse and Pizza Hut.

INDUSTRIAL ACTION: Members of the National Association of Local Government Officers went on strike. The effects of the strike were far reaching as NALGO members were employed in all manner of local facilities, from libraries and leisure centres to housing and finance and countless services were disrupted or stopped entirely. The workers were demanding a twelve per cent pay rise, having refused seven per cent.

This week in 1984

WELL EARNED: Gordon McDonald, a 17-year-old pupil at a school for handicapped children, achieved the Duke of Edinburgh bronze award. Gordon, from Ravenswood, was the first pupil at Hillview School to do this. A corporal in the 1st Condorrat BB, Gordon also had a President’s Badge and was working towards the highest BB honour, the Queen’s Badge.

ANGRY TRADERS: Cumbernauld Traders’ Association were furious that charges they were paying on their property were doubled by Cumbernauld Development Corporation. The traders demanded to know why the increase was so much, especially as they had numerous complaints about the quality of maintenance and security in the town centre.
