ACTION CALL: Kildrum and Park independent Scottish nationalist councillor Margaret Murray called for more action to be taken in combating crime in the area following a vandal attack on Redburn School and a fire at the old Kildrum Primary School. Eleven windows were broken at the school on a Thursday and a further two on the Sunday, causing damage reckoned at £1,000. The empty school had been set on fire several times since it closed. apparently by youths who were breaking in to use the building as a drinking den.

FACELIFT SHUTDOWN: Work on a £200,000 facelift at Cumbernauld’s main Post Office was set to take twice as long as originally expected. When plans to give the new Post Office a new look were first revealed the work was expected to take six weeks, and during the shutdown the public was asked to use a portable office near the the south bus stop in the Town Centre.

HOUSING PLEDGE: Cumbernauld and Kilsyth Labour Party chairwoman Mrs Rosemary McKenna complained about the “overbearing presence” of the Tory Government on housing issues and said Labour would strive to improve tenants’ rights and end qualifications said to unfairly exclude people from public sector housing.

BUDGET DROUGHT: Several garages in Cumbernauld had to ration petrol at the weekend as motorists rushed to fill their tanks before the price went up ahead of the Budget. But they blamed the situation on the fact they were still limited to set allocations of petrol every month.
