JOGGERS TARGETED: Two men aged 39 were shot at with an air rifle in Castlecary while jogging along Thorniecroft Road nearthe Auchenkilns Holdings. Neither was injured, and they pursued a youth who dropped an air rifle and pellets before escaping. During an earlier incident in Condorrat two men were fired at, and one needed to have a pellet surgically removed from his face.

MAIL RAGE: Work on a £200,000 facelift at Cumbernauld’s main post office was set to take twice as long as originally expected. During the shutdown the public were to be asked to use a portable office near the south bus stop in the town centre.

CLIMBER BANNED: Insurance difficulties put paid to a Ravenswood teenager’s fund-raising stunt. Joseph Crummy planned to climb a sheer 150ft face in the Town Centre to raise cash for his summer trip to Norway with the British Schools Exploring Society. But the Development Corporation, while sympathising with his request, couldn’t let it go ahead.

This week in 1974

BRIEF DISPUTE: About 40 workers at Ronald Trist Controls Limited’s factory in Blairlinn stopped work in a dispute about a wage claim - but talks between management and workers settled the problem within hours. Senior management flew north from company headquarters in Buckinghamshire to meet the striking members of the Amalgamated Union of Engineering - and the dispute, caused by a “misunderstanding”, was soon settled.
