This week in 2004

PLAN ON ICE: A highly controversial plan to build houses at Kilsyth’s Cavalry Park was put on hold. It was decided that no conclusion could be reached until a site visit had been arranged. Margaret Mitchell MSP had intervened in the procedure at Scottish Parliament level by tabling a motion against the plans. She hoped that this would prompt North Lanarkshire Council to reject the development and for the Scottish Executive to block it if they did not do so.

This week in 1964

FAR TRAVELLED NURSE: Irene Robertson who was the daughter of Archibald R obertson of Arden Grove returned from 19 weeks in Mexico and the United States. The former Stobhill nurse had also been working in the Space Age Memorial Hospital in Long Beach which was the most modern hospital in America, west of Chicago. Irene undertook a month-long sea voyage to return home via the the Panama Canal.

BIRDHOUSE BID: Locals learned that there would be an eyecatching new addition to Colzium House. Plans were afoot to create an aviary in the courtyard. The cost of the project was estimated at £320 with its inhabitants being gifted to Colzium via The Caged Bird Society.

This week in 1924

RISE IN DISORDER: The canalside area of Auchinstarry seemed to have fallen prey to a crime wave. The number of crimes reported within a year had doubled to 20! Meanwhile crime was on the rise in nearby Croy with nine cases reported in comparison to six the previous year.
