This week in 2003

HONESTY REWARDED: Student Krystina Tagg from Carrickstone was praised after she handed over a bag she found on a bus which was later discovered to contain over £10,000 in cash. 
She had handed the bag over to the bus driver who in turn gave it to police after returning to the depot. When the rightful owners of the bag claimed their property they were so delighted by Krystina’s honesty that they left a substantial reward for her, which she collected at Cumbernauld Police Station.

This week in 1988

AIR SHOW: With Cumbernauld Airport opening soon, there was agreement to host an air display to mark the occasion. There was some controversy regarding this due to public safety concern following the opening of a flying school, heightened by a number of near misses between light aircraft and low flying RAF jets. However councillors insisted that strict guidelines issued by the Civil Aviation Authority would be followed precisely and safety would be paramount.

WINTER PREPARATIONS: With winter coming in Strathclyde Region’s roads department brought in 80,000 tons of gritting salt at a cost of £1.3m. Part of this store was set aside to allow anyone living in Cumbernauld and Kilsyth to collect small quantities of salt to grit their paths and pavements around their houses.

TRAIL GLAZING: A Belgian glassware company confirmed it would open a factory in Cumbernauld, bringing 150 jobs to the New Town. Herver (UK) Ltd would also psend £10,000 to take six local men to Belgium for an eight week course in glass processing. Herver (UK) Ltd were to open their 224,800 square feet factory in West Lenziemill by March.
