ROBIN’S LEGACY: The funeral of Condorrat man Robin Paton saw mourners give donations towards the purchase of bibles and the £650 raised was handed over to Carrickstone Nursing Home. His widow May said: “He would have been absolutely delighted but I think he would have been surprised with the amount.’’ St Maurice’s High School pupils would also receive the bibles too.

This week in 1988

KIMONO CAPER: Scots secretary Malcolm Rifkind donned traditional Japanese dress to perform the opening ceremony for the £20 million OKI plant. He then smashed a barrel of Japanese sake to round off the proceedings, much to the approval of company excecutives who had jetted in from the land of the rising sun to attend. As a bonus, locals learned that 100 new jobs would be created before Christmas .

THEATRE DRAMA: The board of Cumbernauld Theatre ultimately agreed that TAG Theatre should be allowed to have a collection for a ban-the bomb charity but that this political move would be a one-off.
One board member, Donald Masterton had objected and other board members said that they would be keeping a 
closer eye on proceedings in the future.

This week in 1973

SAFETY FEARS: Dullatur residents expressed misgivings about a proposal to locate a young offenders’ institution on their doorstep. The Dullatur Association had not initally objected, then more detailed plans arrived. It was thought that the insitituation would be a touch too near homes, in a move which worried mainly older residents. Chairman Elliot Robertson said: “An emergency meeting is being arranged and it is up to the community to decide.’’
