This week in 1997

GUY Fawkes revellers learned that there would be a new local venue for the fireworks extravaganza. This had been taking place at Cumbernauld Airport but council bosses judged that Broadwood Loch was a better location. Funfair attractions were promised at the event. Councillor Francis Griffin said: “There will also be improved parking facilities at the stadium and a host of activities to help the event go off with a bang.’’

This week in 1987

A STALWART of a Cumbernauld Church reached high office at national level. Jean McColl of Cumbernauld Baptist Church was inaugurated as national president of the Women’s Auxiliary to the Baptist Union of Scotland. Her very own church choir performed at this very special ceremony which kicked off a very busy year. Jean who came from Cedar Road admitted that her diary was full with national engagements for her full term of office.

This week in 1977

SUNDAY opening would continue to be opposed by two local ministers despite the Licensing Board approving the move. Reverend George Harkes of Cumbernauld Old Parish Church said he would persist in fighting management at the Cross Keys in Cumbernauld Village. And the Reverend Fergus MacDonald of the Free Church of Scotland was demanding to know why the Woodcutter in Abronhill had been granted its licence.

AN URGENT appeal went out as Cumbernauld prepared to provide a refuge for Uganda Asians who were seeking asylum. A total of 12 houses had been set aside by the Cumbernauld Development Corporation to accommodate the families and social workers asked local families for furniture, bedding and clothes to kit out the houses.
