1997

Libraries in Cumbernauld were changing with the times and embracing new technology. The old style of paper library tickets went out the window and were replaced by flash new library cards which entitled holders to access all of the 25 libraries in the local authority area.

1987

THE immortal phrase, ‘what’s it called - Cumbernauld’ made it’s national debut on TV and newspapers this week. The slogan, which has become synonymous with the town, was launched this week in 1987 as part of a three year campaign by the Cumbernauld Development Corporation to put the town on the map.

CUMBERNAULD went royal crazy this week as Her Majesty and Prince Philip visited the town. The Queen took time out to speak to the public and take in the sites of the town as part of a busy schedule.

1972

COMMUTERS in Cumbernauld had to put up with transport delays and cancellations this week as a result of railmen’s work to rule. However, a spokesperson for British Rail told the News that New Town services had not been as badly hit as those in other parts of the country.
