1997

A CUMBERNAULD primary school acquired a European twin. Much like Cumbernauld with its French twinning partner of Bron, Baird Memorial Primary School was teamed with a German primary under the European Union’s Socrates Programme. And teachers were set to take part in a fact-finding exchange visit.

1987

DRAMATIC statistics showed that use of the Tryst Sports Centre had greatly increased. Attendence figures were up by a whopping 4248 compared with the spring numbers a year before It was thought that increased numbers of school visits to the centre were partly responsible.

1977

BOOK hoggers were in the last chance saloon after it emerged that all local libraries would start to charge fines. A book amnesty was put in place to allow stragglers to bring back their copies without being hit in the wallet. After that adults would be charged five pence for each book returned late!

1972

A PETITION which was circulated in Kildrum collected some 300 signatures as locals came out in favour of having a Salvation Army Centre on their doorstep, The move for the Clouden Road complex had been opposed by Cumbernauld District Council who wanted the area to be retained as greenbelt land. It was argued that al the community would benefit.
