Festival of Museums remembers Clementina Hawarden

The life of Cumbernauld’s photography pioneer Clementina Hawarden will be discussed at an event in Cumbernauld Museum today (Saturday).

The museum , which is part of Cumbernauld Library in the Town Centre, is participating in a national celebration of museums and galleries on Saturday, May 17.

The event, running from 11am until 3pm, will have a photographic theme and is called Flash Art.

All age groups are welcome and their will be an opportunity to be photographed in period costume or try your hand at various craft activities.

CultureNL museums officer Carol Ann Kerr said: “The Festival of Museums is a great opportunity to showcase our museum facilities under a national banner.

“At Cumbernauld we have a great new museum facility, with space for children to play and enjoy craft or other hands-on activities.

“Our Flash Art Saturday promises to be great fun.

“An added feature will be an opportunity to find out about Lady Clementina Hawarden, a pioneering photographer of the Victorian era, who lived in Cumbernauld House.”

Clementina Hawarden (1822-1865) was a famous portrait photographer of the 1860s. She took hundreds of widely acclaimed photos, mostly of family members. Today around 90 per cent of her work is preserved by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Booking is not required, but a small charge is made for each craft activity, to help us cover the cost of materials”.
