a LONG awaited decision on the A80 upgrade finally came through after the Scottish Office announced its decision – that an eight lane motorway would be built through the town. The Kelvin Valley route was nixed on environmental grounds in a move which provoked fury. Councillor Douglas Gilchrist warned: “It will be hell on wheels.

1987

BMX riders from all across the Central Belt were flocking to the Westfield Wizzards club which had been created by amalgamating two local clubs. Bikers from as far afield as Stirling, Beardsen and Blantyre were now proud members as the club moved into the big league.

FROM JAMAICA to Cumbernauld – that’s the journey being taken by Miss World who is scheduled to visit Woolco. Carribean Queen Cindy Brakespeare would meet shoppers in the popular superstore. Manager Robert Fleming said: “We are delighted to have Cindy in the store and we are sure a lot of people will want to meet her.’’

1972

A CHURCH which was a year behind its construction schedule took a vital step towards its completion when a giant crane rolled up to fit its roof. Abronhill Parish Church was originally set to cost £83,000 but costs had risen to almost £100,000. Churchgoers were holding their services in a hut. Yet they were told that this very modern house of worship would be finished in September.
