Olympic boost for kids

EIGHT Cumbernauld athletes, who are part of Team Lanarkshire for this year’s International Children’s Games in August got a massive boost to their training regime last weekend.

Michelle Bradley, Christie Lamb, Irene McAuley, Shannon Rutter, Collette McCarron, Georgie Rafferty, Cara Wilkie and Zuhayr Siddiqui, joined the rest of the 78-strong team and their coaches who headed en masse for some intensive sessions at Loughborough University’s school of sport, the official preparation headquarters for the UK’s Olympic squad.

The International Children’s Games kick off on August 3 and Team Lanarkshire is competing in athletics, swimming, boys and girls football, badminton, tennis, golf, judo, boys and girls volleyball and sailing.

They will face stiff competition with 80 teams competing from more than 50 countries travelling to Lanarkshire to take part.

Head of the Lanarkshire delegation, Gerry Campbell, says: “This is a fantastic opportunity for all the athletes. They’ve all been making tremendous progress over the past few months since their original selections and they really are set to do Lanarkshire proud.”

Michelle Bradley, Christie Lamb, Irene McAuley and Shannon Rutter, all of St. Maurice’s High School, make up half of Team Lanarkshire’s girls’ volleyball squad. Collette McCarron of Our Lady’s High School will be competing in the tennis, Georgie Rafferty of St. Maurice’s High and Cara Willkie of Abronhill High are part of the girls’ football squad and Zuhayr Siddiqui of The Glasgow Academy is a member of the swimming team.
