Podium finish for Craig

SPORTS car racer Craig Mitchell, from Greenfaulds, returned from a wet weekend at Donington Park, near Derby, with a third place trophy from the big race on Sunday, July 17, part of the World Touring Car event.

The cars had to qualify late Friday afternoon due to the packed itinerary for this major event. Craig only managed a mid pack 13th position.

From 13th slot on the grid on Saturday, Craig made a great start and managed to finish the race in seventh.

In the Sunday race the young driver got his head down for some consistent lap times, steadily picking off other cars in the damp conditions.

By the half-way stage, Craig was up to fifth place and going well. In the second part of the race one of the lead cars was shown a black flag for failing to have a rain light showing at the rear of the car and Craig gained another place. Later in the race Craig managed to catch and pass the fourth placed car which seemed to be suffering from tyre degradation. Sometimes you just need a bit of luck.

The next event on the calendar for Craig is a one-hour endurance race at the Castle Coombe circuit near Bristol. This race is on Sunday, August 14 and the family are looking forward to this different style of competition.
