Snooker down to six matches

Only six matches were played due to a few competitors being on holiday or injured.

In Group A, Martin Cook faced ‘Jumbo’ John Coyle. Martin took an early 2-0 advantage but John used his years of experience to claw it back and it ended in a 2-2 draw.

In Martin’s next match he faced Billy Reid who holds the league’s highest break of 131. Both players had breaks of over 40 and cancelled each other out, with it finishing 2-2.

In Group B the current Club Champion Mark Caulfield got off to a great start and beat Kevin Docherty with a convincing 3-1 victory.

However, his joy soon changed to tears as he was whitewashed 4-0 by ‘Young Gun’ Wesley Fox in his next match.

Wes was in great form all night and although he had no big breaks he put in a solid performance against Stevie McMilland and won 3-1.

All eyes were on Table 10 when old timer Willie Scott took on former professional ‘Mr Magic’ Mark Boyle.

In the first frame Mark was pulling out his hair as Willie tied him up in knots and went on to take the frame.

In the second, Mark never potted a ball as Willie had a couple of 30 breaks.

The third saw roles reverse as Willie failed to pot a ball. Breaks of 51 and 87 helped Mark win that.

At 2-1 and 72 points all, Willie had a great chance to snooker Mark to take the advantage in the final frame but he blew it. Mark went on to win it and it ended in a 2-2 draw.

Finally, just a reminder to all local snooker fans that next Sunday night is the final week of the league, and it will see the top four will qualify into the big money knock-out stages.

During the day the club is holding The Red Triangle Open and anybody who wishes to come along to watch will be made most welcome.
