Stephen races into the top 10

IN only his third year racing, Cumbernauld driver Stephen Emslie has broken into the top 10 of the Scottish XR2 Championship.

The Smithstone resident finished eighth in both races of the pool's only away fixture of the season at Cadwell Park in Lincolnshire last month, taking him up to joint eighth in the drivers' championship.

The 48-year-old said: "It's fantastic, to be up there's just a good feeling. I've never been at this end (of the standings] before - racing feels even better now that I'm further up and competing."

Stephen, who works as a fire fighter, missed the first race of the season and so decided he must compete in the away fixture to make up the points he missed out on, despite the huge cost of travelling to the east of England.

"It cost about 500 in total for that race alone," Stephen said. "That was entry fee and petrol costs. Fewer guys go down to race because it's so expensive, so that gave me a chance to make up on some of the ground I lost after missing the first race of the season.

"My aim now is to finish as close to the top five as possible, definitely within the top 10. I need to try and find my way up the grid for starting, so that means putting in a better performance in qualifying."

The next race of the XR2 Championship is on Sunday, July 25.

The XR2 drivers' open day at Knockhill in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust on May 22 and 23 was a huge success.

They raised 1650 for the charity.
