Top accolade for Bully Wee groundsman

CLYDE Groundsman, David Gilmore has been named as the Institute of Groundsmandship Groundsman of the year, after being rewarded for his hard work and dedication to keeping the home pitch in tip-top condition.

While Clyde players battle it out every week against SFL opposition, David has been fighting with the Scottish climate in a bid to keep the home turf playable, and the accolade proves he has come out on top.

“I’m really pleased that my efforts and those of the apprentices working on the pitch have been recognised,” said David.

“The weather conditions have been challenging to say the least over the past couple of years, particularly with the freezing winters we have had, so to win this award is fantastic.”

David has battled snow, sun, rain and wind, often all in one day.

Clyde Secretary John Taylor said: “It’s great news and very well deserved.

“It’s a tribute to his skills, we are delighted with the playing surface and there’s no doubt that the players enjoy playing on it.

“It’s one of best pitches that many of them will have played on and we all appreciate his work.

“We get the benefit every time we play on it so we’re very grateful.”

Bully Wee boss Jim Duffy also congratulated David on his award.

He conceded that whilst a nice playing surface can make both the home and away team play better, it gives his player something to look forward to.

“Every team that comes here comments on the pitch, and it’s really one of the best in the country,” said the gaffer.

“Fair play to David for his exceptional work.

“The pitch is terrific and all our players always look forward to playing on it.”

Councillor Jim Logue, Chair of North Lanarkshire Leisure praised David’s efforts and added: “This is a fitting recognition for the hard work put in by David and I would just like to add my congratulations to him on picking up this well deserved award.

”This award demonstrates North Lanarkshire Leisure’s commitment to providing Clyde FC with the highest quality playing surface.”
