TWO Cumbernauld athletes picked up silverware at the recent Scottish Schools Triathlon Championships.

Saoirse Ferguson, a pupil at Holy Cross Primary School in Croy, took second place in the age eight category, which saw the young athletes competing in a 50m swim, 1km bike ride, and 600m run. Saoirse was just beaten by Elena McGorum from Priorsford Primary in Peebles.

In the 15-16 age group, Greenfaulds High School pupil Heather Allan also won silver following a 400m swim, 8km bike ride and 3000m run.

The local youngsters were just two of over 200 pupils from across the country who took part in the championships which were at the University of Stirling.

The event, hosted by Stirling Triathlon Club in partnership with triathlonscotland, comprises six different age group swim, bike and run races.

Pupils aged eight to 17 raced over tailored distances, with plenty of great performances across each event.

Many triathletes racing in the Schools Championships have gone on to represent Scotland at the British Triathlon Inter Regional Championships (IRC), an annual youth event bringing together the most promising young triathletes from across the UK.
