Tribute to Cumbernauld charity from mother of Commnwealth athlete

The mother of Commonwealth Games athlete Meggan Dawson-Farrell has praised a Cumbernauld charity for its support.

The 21-year-old wheelchair racer will represented Scotland on Tuesday, taking fourth place in her heat.

Meggan, who lives in Tullibody with her parents, has spina bifida and hydrocepghalus. Her mum Kirstie has gone on the record to thank the Scottish Spina Bifida Association for introducing her to the sport and its ongoing support which has helped her become a world class competitor.

Kirstie said: “Megan’s life was changed completely, thanks to the Cumbernauld based Scottish Spina Bifida Association (SSBA). Meggan has gone from being a shy, depressed and bullied young school pupil to the confident young woman of today, representing her country in not only this Commonwealth Games, but also the GB podium potential squad in the next Paralymics in Rio 2016.

“Her incredible transformation is all down to a sports taster session organised by the Scottish Spina Bifida Association, a charity that has been supporting Megan and our family.

“Thanks to the SSBA and sport, my beautiful daughter Maggan is now full of confidence and is working hard training to reach her sporting goals.”

Meggan, who is also an ambassador for the SSBA, will be leaving to take part in the World Juniors at Stokemandiville on August 1.
