Tryst '˜77 celebrate double success at handball Scottish Cup finals weekend

The event, held at the Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility in Motherwell, is the climax to the domestic season with semi-final and final matches played in various age groups across the weekend.

Tryst had seven teams taking part at various levels with two of them - the women’s and transition girls teams - going on to lift their respective trophies.

The women’s side took on Glasgow in their semi-final and while there have been many close encounters between these teams over the years, on this occasion Tryst were too strong and secured a comfortable win.

The women then rounded off the weekend, proving too strong on the day for a spirited Edinburgh side in the final.

The Tryst ’77 men were also up against Glasgow - recently crowned league champions again and reigning cup holders - in their semi-final.

Glasgow held the lead throughout but Tryst fought hard and refused to go away. The pattern of the game saw Glasgow open up a five-goal lead and Tryst would battle back.

Each time Tryst would get back to only one or two goals behind but they could never quite get level or edge ahead. With time running out Tryst gambled but couldn’t convert their chances and lost by 28-26.

Tryst’s Transition Girls team (2002/03) played well to beat Troon in their final, but the Youth Girls (2000/01) were disappointed to lose to Kelvinside, their small squad running out of steam after leading for long spells.

The Youth Boys were involved in the game of the weekend in their final against Livingston, battling back from two goals down with a minute left of normal time only to lose in extra-time.

Tryst’s Super Minis to Minis also took part with the emphasis in their games on fun and developing skills.
