Tryst juniors get call-up

This is the world’s largest youth handball tournament with over 1000 teams and 16000 players participating.

For the entire week the centre of Gothenburg is taken over by handball with approximately 60 games taking place at the same time, all day, every day, starting at 8am and finishing at 7pm. Every age group, from under tens right through to under 21s, boys and girls, is catered for.

The Tryst players selected for their respective Scotland teams are Mitchell Freeburn, Kayla Wallace, Megan Quinn, Olivia Caw and Chloe Ritchie.

As the standard of opposition is extremely high and Scotland are competing against vastly more experienced teams from strong handball nations, expectations are modest but realistic. But from previous visits the Scottish teams know that if they play to their maximum and give 100 per cent then they are more than capable of earning the respect of their counterparts and providing the occasional surprise result.

The format of the competition is for each team to be entered in a group consisting of six teams and to play each of the other teams in the group before moving on to the knockout phase of the competition. In these round robin group stages, the boys have been drawn in a group that includes teams from Norway, Iceland, Czech Republic and the host nation Sweden.

Meanwhile the girls are up against sides from Norway, France and Sweden.

In addition to the players selected, the club are also delighted for women’s team coach Gary McCafferty who was recently appointed as head coach for the youth girls’ squad.

The club wishes the players and everyone involved with the Scotland squad the best of luck for the tournament.

The club also recently held its Player of the Year night at Broadwood Stadium with awards for the mini section, juniors, women and men.

It’s been something of an up-and-down season for the club. League results were mixed with some fantastic performances and results interspersed with some frustrating showings.

The men’s team recovered from finishing last season empty handed by winning the league and cup double while the other teams and age groups within the club all had some excellent spells throughout the season, but were unfortunately extremely up and down against some very strong opposition.

The club would like to thank Jim Jack Brake & Clutch Services, Stuart McLaughlan Joiners, Grants, Dave Brogan Physiotherapy, Morrisons, World of Turquoise and the People’s Postcode Lottery for all their support over the season. Thanks also to everyone, family and friends, who came along on the night to support the club at the Player of the Year Disco and also provided support throughout the season.

The various winners were: Minis – Euan Forbes and Allanah Thomas. Juniors – Olivia Caw and Jason Reddock. Women – Amanda Hawthorne and Sarah Carrick. Men – James Yule and Mark McGuinness.
