Under 16s get Warriors shot

The last couple of weekends have seen the trial matches for the Glasgow Warriors Under 16 pathway system take place.

Over these two weekends four representative teams from across the west of Scotland compete against each other.

The players from North Lanarkshire based clubs take part in the Chiefs squad, alongside players from South Lanarkshire. The players go through a selection and training process that started at Easter and continued through-out the summer holiday, and culminated in the trial matches.

The initial Chiefs squad of 85 players was whittled down to 23 for the trial matches, with representatives from Cumbernauld, Waysiders Drumpellier and Dalziel Rugby Clubs all taking part in the process.

This year saw the most successful set of results ever for the Chiefs with two victories (against Warriors and Giants) and a draw (against Hurricanes), meaning they finished as the top side in the west.

From these trial matches, the extended squad of 95 players will now be taken down to 30, to form a Glasgow squad who will take on the other Scottish regions and these players will have the opportunity of joining the recently announced Scottish Rugby Academy structure.

In addition to under 16 players taking part in the pathway system, the new academy structure will now also see under 14 and under 15 players take part in additional sessions over and above their club commitments.
