Willie picks up second trophy

Only 12 players turned up to play this once very popular game but it’s fair to say tension was still high in the club nonetheless.

There were four first-round matches and four byes. In the first round Colin Allen beat Kevin Glen 151-136, Stevie MacMillan beat Kean Jogger Gordon Smith 152-107, Martin Cook looked shell shocked as he was beaten 153-143 by Dougie Fraser and Andy Jackson played well to dispose of Garry Coats 151-113.

In the quarter-final the current billiards champion Mark Caulfield had to dig deep but overcame the ever improving Colin Allen. Fresh from his Six Week League Victory last Sunday Willie Scott faced Stevie McMillan. Willie was shell shocked when Stevie conceeded halfway through the match but never complained as he moved into the semi-final.

If it wasn’t for tournament chairman Colin Blair this tournament would have died a death long ago but he has kept it going and faced Dougie Fraser in the next Match. Colin won this with a 151-119 victory. In the last quarter-final “The Postie” John Malcolm defeated Andy Jackson 151-104 and the semi-final line up was complete. Mark Caulfield v Willie Scott and Colin Blair v John Malcolm.

In the first semi-final Mark Caulfield never looked comfortable at all and was beaten convincingly 151-81 by Willie Scott. The other semi was a bit closer but John Malcolm is proving hard to beat these days and won 151-124 against Colin Blair.

The final was a very tense afair and the lead changed hands several times throughout the game. John Malcolm had a chance at the end of the game but missed an easy red and Willie Scott pounced and sent the postie packing winning 151-132. Thanks to Colin Blair for refereeing the final.
