Warning over scam readers have reported

A number of readers have made us aware of a new scam doing the rounds  -by a fraudster claiming to be from the Post Office.

It has emerged that they have been targeted by a plausible sounding caller who tells them that they are owed a three figure sum of cash from the organisation.

The caller - who is plausible and chatty at all stages of the scam they have embarked upon- states that she already has the bank details of the person she is speaking to but that she would just like to double check them before her organisation issues the cash.

Of the three individuals who flagged this up to us, two opted wisely to terminate the call.

However a third potential victim admits that the only reason he did not hand over these details was because he was unable to find his bank card.- and asked the caller to phone him back.

Fortunately she did not do so and he has since realised that he was on the cusp of being defrauded - after a younger family member intervened.

A Post Office spokesperson said: “We can confirm that this is definitely a scam. We would never ask customers to divulge their private bank details.

“We are saddened that fraudsters are using the trusted reputation of Post Office to try to trick people.

“We hope that people do not fall for this con.”
